All That Remains / DPS

Type: Urban
Date: 5.18.2k10
Location: N42° 17.751 W083° 06.402

“All That Remains” is planned to be an ongoing series of abandon and ruined sites documented by BCX members.

On an exploratory tour in Detroit we came across this location. Seeing parking was close and the indigenous population was low we quickly geared up for an improvised exploration of the site.

The long dark main hallway was a little foreboding but we cautiously entered the structure. I still cannot get over how dark it is in these places, even in the middle of the day. Some of the photos were a result of flashing a room just to light it up since our flashlights were doing little to cut through the darkness.

The air inside was fair with a minor musty/damp smell along with a slight burnt smell in some areas. The floor was wet, water covered in areas and littered with building debris and general garbage. Exterior doors and windows were broken or removed. Evidence of fire was visible in areas of the school, most likely due to arson after the school was closed. The walls looked fairly intact except for a few large holes broken into them for unknown reasons, maybe from mining scrap metals. Urban art covered a majority of the walls of the school inside and out. Just a few broken desks and tables remained inside the building. The drop ceiling inside was completely destroyed and now littered the floor. Wires, cables and supports hung from the ceiling like twisted metal vines.

From our exploration it did not look like the structure had any permanent residents apart from some birds and maybe small animals and rodents. Obviously nothing of value remains, even the building itself probably cannot be reused. However I was very surprised to find a new and clean giant stuffed dog just sitting there and a little shocked to see a small child’s tent in one of the rooms.

This was an easy access site (at least as of this time) in what looked like a quiet part of town. If you plan a visit use caution, don’t linger to long and it’s wise to go during the day with a friend. Click any pic in the post to see the entire set.
