All That Remains / DPS

Type: Urban
Date: 5.18.2k10
Location: N42° 17.751 W083° 06.402

“All That Remains” is planned to be an ongoing series of abandon and ruined sites documented by BCX members.

On an exploratory tour in Detroit we came across this location. Seeing parking was close and the indigenous population was low we quickly geared up for an improvised exploration of the site.

The long dark main hallway was a little foreboding but we cautiously entered the structure. I still cannot get over how dark it is in these places, even in the middle of the day. Some of the photos were a result of flashing a room just to light it up since our flashlights were doing little to cut through the darkness.

The air inside was fair with a minor musty/damp smell along with a slight burnt smell in some areas. The floor was wet, water covered in areas and littered with building debris and general garbage. Exterior doors and windows were broken or removed. Evidence of fire was visible in areas of the school, most likely due to arson after the school was closed. The walls looked fairly intact except for a few large holes broken into them for unknown reasons, maybe from mining scrap metals. Urban art covered a majority of the walls of the school inside and out. Just a few broken desks and tables remained inside the building. The drop ceiling inside was completely destroyed and now littered the floor. Wires, cables and supports hung from the ceiling like twisted metal vines.

From our exploration it did not look like the structure had any permanent residents apart from some birds and maybe small animals and rodents. Obviously nothing of value remains, even the building itself probably cannot be reused. However I was very surprised to find a new and clean giant stuffed dog just sitting there and a little shocked to see a small child’s tent in one of the rooms.

This was an easy access site (at least as of this time) in what looked like a quiet part of town. If you plan a visit use caution, don’t linger to long and it’s wise to go during the day with a friend. Click any pic in the post to see the entire set.

Would you like to play with my flashlight?

Type: Paranormal

As dirty as the title sounds, no, it's NOT what you think.

Back in mid-February, cyc0tik and I made the long trek out to the great state of Florida to visit my Grams at the "snowbird" campground, get away from daily life and to catch some GHOSTS!

We excitedly decided to do a ghost tour (which they call Dark of the Moon) of St. Augustine Lighthouse (which TAPS so famously toured).

Originally scheduled for Valentine's evening (because that's how we do), I just couldn't possibly pass up the Valentine's Day dance with the old folks at the campground. Man, for being in their 70's and 80's (and even 90's!!!), these people can dance (and drink!)!

ANYWAY, we ended up touring the Lighthouse the following Friday. We pulled up to the staging area, excitement and nervousness and wonder abound. This was our first "real" ghost hunt.

We had two tour guides who were absolutely great and the tour was split up into an hour of tour + instruction/stories followed by an hour of self exploration. Wait...LOL...you know what I mean!

So on to my special story...while on the first part of the tour, the guides were explaining how, on July 10, 1873, 3 young girls died when the cart they were riding in crashed into the water. There was Mary-15, Eliza-13 and another young girl-age not known. It's been suspected that the girls (especially Eliza, although I don't remember why) will make themselves known in various parts of the keeper's house.

The group headed down into the basement. I was second to last down the steps with cyc0tik behind me. To make sure I didn't trip and fall (it was dark by the way), I turned on my mini-flashlight for a few seconds as I started to make my way down the stairs. As I continued down, I turned it off and stuck it in my pocket.

As the guides were telling their stories, I stood next to the spiral staircase (flashlight still in pocket and that side of me was closest to the staircase). Cyc0tik came around behind me and set the K2 meter on the step next to us. The K2 meter was "silent".

I suddenly felt a slight pressure on my leg where the flashlight was (yes, still in my pocket) and almost like something was trying to move the flashlight around. My first thought was 'maybe I'm standing too close to the steps and I'm pressing up against one of the bars'. So, I took a step away and continued to listen to the tour guides.

Lo and behold! IT STARTED AGAIN!

I looked down a few times trying to figure out what the heck was happening and cyc0tik, watching me the whole time, whispers, "what's wrong?" I whispered back that "it feels like something keeps trying to push the flashlight around". He glanced over at the K2 meter which at this point is going crazy. Not to mention the fact that, that part of my leg was now REALLY REALLY cold.

The flashlight was metal although felt neutral/almost warm to the touch. So I'm not really sure what happened there but I've had a hell of time debunking it since. When we got home, I even put the same jeans back on and tried to recreate that feeling...putting the same flashlight in the same pocket angled the same way...standing completely still or shifting slightly but nothing felt the same or even came close.

Since the first flashlight came to light shortly after the girl's untimely deaths, could it be one of them was just curious?
